How many countries are there in the world? Well, the question of which places count as sovereign states is controversial. Territories, dependencies, self-declared states, autonomous regions, and disputed territories further throw confusion in the mix. Since I am on a mission to visit every country in the world, I need a number. 196 – That is my number. The count includes 193 Member and 2 Non-Member States in the United Nations, plus Taiwan.
